An introduction to the study of Chicana/o films produced in the second half of the twentieth century. In this course we will analyze films directed by Moctesuma Esparza, Paul Espinosa, Harry Gamboa, Jr., Efrain Gutierrez, Edward James Olmos, Sylvia Morales, Severo Perez, Lourdes Portillo, Jesus Salvador Trevinio, Luis Valdez, Willie Varela, and Robert Young. Films viewed will likely include Salt of the Earth (1954); I Am Joaquin (1969); Requiem 29 (1971); Yo Soy Chicano (1972); Please Don't Bury Me Alive (1976); Chicana (1979); Zoot Suit (1981); The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982); El Norte (1983); Imperfecto (1983); No Supper (1987); A Lost Man (1992); American Me (1992); La Familia (1993); Huevitos (1994); And the Earth Did Not Swallow Him (1994); Seo00720069ta Extraviada (2001); Walkout (2006); and The Perfect Game (2010). We will discuss the history and production of these films, but we will also analyze their representational and formal qualities. Attendance at some 8 am or evening screenings will be required.
