PLEASE READ CAREFULLY ALL THE PARAGRAPHS BELOW THAT APPLY TO ENGLISH COURSES IN WHICH YOU WANT TO ENROLL. SOME COURSES HAVE LIMITED ENROLLMENT AND/OR HAVE EARLY APPLICATION PROCEDURES.

ALL ENGLISH COURSES: Some courses are in such high demand that they will end up having wait lists on Tele-BEARS. If you end up having to put yourself on one for an English course, please log on to Info-BEARS (http://infobears.berkeley.edu) to check your advancing status on the wait list.
ENGLISH R1A AND R1B: Note that the book lists and course descriptions for individual sections of English R1A and R1B will be posted on the web and also on the SOUTHERN-most bulletin board in the hall across from the English Department office (322 Wheeler Hall) as of Monday, April 14.
ENGLISH MAJORS: The areas of concentration that apply to each upper-division course are listed immediately above the book list for the class. Please click on the Areas of Concentration (left) for a list of all the courses that fall under each area of concentration, as well as a list of Fall 2008 courses that satisfy the pre-1800 requirement for the English major.
ENGLISH 100: Years ago, when English 100 was first offered, junior English majors sometimes had trouble being admitted to their first-choice (or even second-choice) English 100 section, largely because many of the spaces had already been taken by students with earlier Tele-BEARS appointments--especially by seniors, many of whom had already satisfied the junior seminar requirement and were taking a second or even third 100 course. As a result, we took the following steps to remedy that situation; please note:
- If you will be a SENIOR English major in Fall '08, Tele-Bears will block you form enrolling directly into a 100 section; instead, please put yourself on the Tele-BEARS wait list for the ONE section you are most interested in, and we will enroll you into that section within the next few days, IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY TAKEN A 100 COURSE and provided the section is not yet full (which it should not be in Phase I of Tele-BEARS). If you are currently taking or have already taken a 100, you will not be admitted into the class until Phase II of Tele-BEARS is over and all the other English majors seeking admittance who have NOT already taken a 100 have been enrolled (and provided there is still space left in the class, which often there will not be).
- Whether you will be a senior or junior English major or intended English major, Tele-BEARS will block you from enrolling in more than one section of 100; if you choose to waitlist yourself for an additional section, you should be forewarned that you will only be admitted to that waitlisted section if there is still room for you after Phase II of Tele-BEARS is over.
- If you are a student with a major other than English, a sophomore, or a limited-status student, you will not be able to enroll in English 100; although you may waitlist yourself for the course, you will only be enrolled if there is room for you once classes have started.
- Everyone: If you want to be admitted to English 100, it is advisable to enroll (or waitlist) for it in Phase I of Tele-BEARS, as some sections will most likely fill during Phase I.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP COURSES (English 143A, 143B, 143N, 143T, C143V, and 243B): These are instructor-approved courses, and enrollment is limited. Only upper-division students should apply for 143A, 143B, 143N, 143T, or C143V. Graduate students and (in exceptional cases) upper-division students may apply for 243B. In order to be considered for admission to any of these courses, you must submit a writing sample AND an application form to the corresponding instructor's mailbox in 322 Wheeler Hall BY 4 P.M., TUESDAY, APRIL 22, AT THE LATEST; consult the course description in this Announcement of Classes for the section you are applying to for details concerning the length and nature of the writing sample required, if any, and get the appropriate application form from the racks outside the door to the English Department (322 Wheeler Hall). The instructors will review the writing samples and applications, and the class lists will be posted on the wall in the hall directly across from the English Department office (322 Wheeler Hall) on Thursday, May 1. Please come on or shortly after Thursday, May 1, to see if your name is on the class list for the section you applied to; please check in person, as this information is NOT available over the phone. ONLY STUDENTS ON THESE CLASS LISTS WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE CORRESPONDING CLASSES, AND EACH ADMITTED STUDENT WILL NEED TO OBTAIN HIS/HER INDIVIDUAL CLASS ENTRY CODE (CEC) FROM THE INSTRUCTOR AT THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. NO ONE WILL THEREFORE BE ABLE TO ENROLL IN THESE PARTICULAR CLASSES ON TELE-BEARS UNTIL THE FIRST DAY THESE CLASSES MEET IN THE FALL. ADMITTED STUDENTS WILL NEED TO LOG ON TO TELE-BEARS SOON AFTER CLASSES HAVE STARTED TO ACTUALLY ENROLL IN THESE COURSES.
ENGLISH 150: This is an instructor-approved course, and enrollment is limited. This course is normally open to senior English majors only, and, in addition, in order to be considered for admission, you must fill out the corresponding application (available from the racks on the wall outside the English Department office [322 Wheeler Hall]) and return it to the box on the counter inside the English Department office BY 4 P.M., TUESDAY, APRIL 22, AT THE LATEST. The instructors will review the applications, and the class lists will be posted on the wall in the hall directly across from the English Department office on Thursday, May 1. Please come on or shortly after Thursday, May 1, to see if your name is on the class list for the section you applied to; please check in person, as this information is NOT available over the phone. ONLY THE STUDENTS ON THESE CLASS LISTS WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE CORRESPONDING CLASSES, AND EACH ADMITTED STUDENT WILL NEED TO OBTAIN HIS/HER INDIVIDUAL CLASS ENTRY CODE (CEC) FROM THE INSTRUCTOR AT THE FIRST CLASS MEETING--AND THEREFORE WILL NEED TO WAIT TILL THEN TO ACTUALLY ENROLL IN ANY OF THESE PARTICULAR CLASSES ON TELE-BEARS. (Further information regarding full versus still-available 150 sections will be included at the bottom of the posted class lists.) Please note that since demand for the course is high, NO ONE MAY APPLY FOR MORE THAN ONE 150 SECTION.
ENGLISH H195A (HONORS COURSE): This course is an instructor-approved course open only to senior English majors with an overall G.P.A. of 3.51 or higher and a G.P.A. of 3.65 or higher in courses taken at Berkeley in the major. In order to be considered for admission to H195A, you must fill out the corresponding application (available from the racks on the wall outside the English Department office [322 Wheeler Hall]) and return it, along with a photocopy of a critical paper you have written for another class, to the box on the counter inside the English Department office BY 4:00 P.M., TUESDAY, APRIL 22, AT THE LATEST. Since the department must review the G.P.A.s of H195A applicants for courses taken all the way through the Spring 2008 semester and the instructors must carefully assess the applications, it will not be possible to determine who has been admitted until the fall semester is about to start. Therefore, ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASSES IN THE FALL, THE CLASS LISTS FOR H195A WILL BE POSTED IN THE HALL OUTSIDE THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT. IF YOU ARE ADMITTED TO ONE OF THE H195A SECTIONS, YOU WILL NEED TO OBTAIN YOUR CEC (CLASS ENTRY CODE) AT THE FIRST CLASS MEETING FROM YOUR INSTRUCTOR, AND THEN YOU WILL NEED TO LOG ON TO TELE-BEARS AND ADD THE COURSE SOON AFTER THAT; NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO ENROLL IN H195A BEFORE CLASSES START.

UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN BECOMING WRITING TUTORS (ENGLISH 310): This is an instructor-approved course with limited enrollment. In order to be considered for admission, you must pick up an application for an interview at the Student Learning Center , Atrium, in the Cesar Chavez Student Center , during the spring semester through finals week or during the week before fall semester classes begin. No one may apply after Wednesday of the first week of classes. Students admitted to 310 will need to appear in person at the Student Learning Center , at the time the Learning Center specifies, in order to obtain the course control number and then enroll. See the course description in this Announcement of Classes under English 310 for more details.
DE-CAL CLASSES: All proposals for Fall 2008 DE-Cal courses must be submitted to the English Department Chair’s office (in 322 Wheeler Hall) BY 4:00 P.M., THURSDAY, MAY 1. Please note that individual faculty members may sponsor only one DE-Cal course per semester. Students wishing to offer a DE-Cal course must provide, to the English Department Chair’s office, the following for approval: 1) a completed COCI Special Studies Course Proposal Form, available on DE-Cal’s website at www.decal.org, for 98 and 198 classes. Students must download and complete this form and obtain the proposed faculty sponsor’s signature on it before submitting it, along with the other necessary paperwork; 2) a copy of the syllabus of the proposed course; 3) a copy of the course description, including the criteria for passing the course. A few days after the May 1 submission deadline, the students whose proposals have been approved will be notified that they need to see Laurie Kerr, in 322 Wheeler, in order to arrange for a classroom for their course and to work out a few other details before they deliver copies of their approved proposals to COCI and to the DE-Cal office.
INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSES: These are instructor-approved courses and require a written application--obtainable in 322 Wheeler for undergraduate courses and in 319 Wheeler for graduate courses. After you have received the instructor's signature on the form, you will need to return to the appropriate English office to obtain a course control number before you can enroll in the course on Tele-BEARS. Often students will elect to wait until fall courses have started to apply for independent study courses.
