Professor McQuade works on late 19th-century American literature and culture, the theory and practice of non-fiction, literature and popular culture, the American Renaissance, advertising, and the essay. His current project is entitled "The Promised Land," a study of the interrelations of literature, patent medicine advertising, and the rhetoric of evangelical religion.
