Description

The goal of the course is to help students to feel confident in talking about the arts and to take pleasure in that confidence, as well as to feel at home in the various venues that exhibit art and performance at Berkeley. We will discuss how best to look at and interpret works of visual arts exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum; we will attend dance and theater events at Cal Performances, and we may include something in the city. Admission to events on campus will be provided at no cost to students. Students will be expected to produce one-page reviews of some aspect of performances and they will lead the class in discussing some work of visual art. I am interested in students from a wide variety of backgrounds who want to experience the arts at Berkeley in the social setting provided by conversation about what we see. There are no prerequisites.

This 1-unit course may not be counted as one of the twelve courses required to complete the English major.
