"Brinton, L.: The Structure of Modern English
Recommended Text: Pinker, S.: The Language Instinct "
This course examines the structure of modern English, including its phonology (sound structure), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure) and semantics (linguistic meaning), as well as some aspects of pragmatics (contextual meaning). The focus is on standard American English, but some consideration is also given to other varieties of English throughout the world and to comparison of English with other languages. No previous background in linguistics is required.
