This course will trace the career of the nineteenth century's most exuberantly creative novelist. We will pay special attention to the idea of 'character' in the novels, to their innovative narrative techniques and to their role in creating the Victorian social imagination. These novels will give you abundant opportunities for learning about and practicing literary criticism, which is the main goal of the course. You will also be introduced to the craft of research and asked to use it in writing your seminar paper.
