Description

This course will explore the varieties of ways in which migrants to the United States inscribe their experiences and subjectivities on the U.S. landscape. We will be interested in how narratives of race and ethnicity are constructed in the wake of successive waves of migration to the U.S. and in how these narratives often diverge from those that previously existed. And we will consider how literature, performance, and other cultural practices complicate and destabilize these discourses of race, ethnicity, and nation that appear natural or fixed.

We'll read novels, poems and short stories and watch films. A Course Reader providing literary criticism and historical criticism will also be available.

English 31AC satisfies UC Berkeley's American Cultures requirement.
