This course will be an introduction to linguistic study of modern English. We will explore English phonology (sound structure), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (linguistic meaning), as well as some aspects of pragmatics (contextual meaning) and usage. The focus will be on standard American English, but consideration will also be given to other varieties of English throughout the world and to comparison of English with other languages. No previous background in linguistics is required. This course is recommended as preparation for English 101 and 179.
