This course is an introduction to linguistic analysis of present-day English. The focus will be on phonology (sound structure), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure) and semantics (linguistic meaning); some attention will also be given to pragmatics (contextual meaning), usage, variation in English throughout the world and comparison of English with other languages. No previous background in linguistics is required. This course is recommended preparation for English 101 and 179.
