Description
Assigned text: Henry David Thoreau, Walden, Civil Disobedience and Other Writings (Norton Critical Editions). You are required to use this edition.
We will read Walden twice, in order to gain a deeper understanding of this rich and frustrating book. The number of pages assigned each week will be considerably less than in most English classes, but you will need to read slowly and deliberately, so roughly the same amount of out-of-class prep time will be needed. Class meetings will vary between occasional lectures, full group discussion, and small group discussion. You will be writings two ten-page essays.
