William Faulkner was one of the crucial writers of the twentieth century. In this course, we will focus on The Sound and the Fury (1929), Light in August (1932), Absalom, Absalom! (1936)—three extraordinary and experimental novels, all set in the same fictional location of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. We will be thinking together about topics including narration and the representation of consciousness; modernism and the mythical method; tragedy and the legacy of slavery. Throughout the semester, we will be working on close reading and annotation. The course includes a three-week collaborative workshop on critical writing skills with preparation assignments culminating in a ten-page essay.
