But we can only do three of them! And the winners are: Bad Education (Pedro Almodóvar, Spain, 2004); Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, US, 2001); and In the Mood for Love (Won Kar-Wai, Hong Kong, 2001), all landmarks in post-modern cinematic story-telling. (Runners-up for those curious enough to do a search: Haneke’s Caché, Kore-eda’s Still Walking, and Almodóvar’s Talk to Her.) I enjoy the instructor’s enviable privilege of choice; but I’ll eventually be asking seminar members to make—and discuss—their own lists.
