The UC Berkeley English Department offers a variety of lower and upper-division classes throughout the summer. We welcome both Berkeley Students and Visitors to explore the curriculum of the nation’s top-ranked department known for stellar teaching, with a record-high number of Distinguished Teaching Awardees. Students have the opportunity to take their first college-level writing course, explore topics in literature that they could not prioritize during the academic year, and fulfill their major/minor requirements.
English Majors
In addition to our course offerings in the Fall and Spring semesters, Summer is a great opportunity for students to further develop their critical literary skills and broaden their academic horizons. Berkeley English majors can take core courses or electives of their choosing to fulfill major requirements.
See our Berkeley English Summer Sessions page for more information.
We’re also very excited about our Summer Sessions Abroad Course in London. Note that no more than two summer courses can count towards the major.
If you have questions about Summer Sessions courses being counted toward the major, consult with the English Undergraduate Major Advisors at english_advising@berkeley.edu
Pre-College Scholars
High school students in the Bay Area and beyond have the opportunity to take Berkeley Summer Sessions courses through the Pre-College Scholars Program which gives participants the experience of taking college courses. We invite Pre-College Scholars to enroll in any of our lower division courses (English R1A, R1B, 17, 20, 31AC, 43A) or two of our upper division courses (English 176 and 180Z).
Freshman Edge and Transfer Edge
Summer Sessions runs two programs for incoming students. For freshmen and transfers alike, our department’s Edge Curriculum allows you to satisfy degree and major requirements as well as explore new fields of interest.
Freshman Edge is a program that supports newly admitted freshmen students before they begin their first year on campus. Freshman Edge students may be particularly interested in satisfying the Reading and Composition requirement (English R1A/B) and/or the American Cultures requirement (English 31AC).
Transfer Edge provides the same opportunities as Freshman Edge but specifically helps to aid the transition from community college, another UC/CSU, or another institution to UC Berkeley. We invite Transfer Edge students to enroll in our upper-division elective courses and satisfy your American Cultures requirement.
