Professional Statement

My research investigates the revolutions in poetic and political communication that defined seventeenth-century England. I am currently working on a monograph entitled The Speech Without Doors: John Milton and the Tradition of Print Oratory. This work explores the classical and humanist practice of circulating orations in written forms, and Milton’s integration of this tradition with the popular British form of the printed parliamentary speech. I also work on contemporary Australian Aboriginal writing, with a concentration on the role of Aboriginal language revitalization and written forms of speech in Kim Scott’s novels. In both areas of research, I focus on how subjects who are systematically excluded from public speech invoke oral forms in print to authorize their entry into the public sphere.
